Das Murany

The House
of Murany

A fairy-tale place in the Gastein Alps

THE MAKING

An interior made by hand.

The interiors were designed by a former Soho House designer from New York and realised with uncompromising craftsmanship and finesse. The woodwork was crafted by a cabinetmaker for the House of Ralph Lauren.

Local artisans laid tropical plank parquet, applied Turkish wallpapers, and fitted English brassware. Hundreds of metres of velvet were sewn by hands accustomed to the ateliers of opera houses. The marble for the bathrooms was supplied by the British firm responsible for furnishing such institutions as Claridge's and Harrod's.

An ensemble of refined furnishings completes the rooms, where carefully selected antiques converse with detailed reproductions of Austrian furniture classics. Handcrafted brass chandeliers, Italian silks, glassware from the last Bohemian lead-glass manufactory, and the finest Chinese porcelain lend further distinction.

“Within these rooms, past and present, society and retreat, indulgence and frivolity meet in poised equilibrium. What once took place here has not vanished; it lingers, quietly breathing through every corner.”

01

The Corridor

The corridor — illuminated by five hand-crafted Art Deco glass chandeliers — recalls, through its portrait gallery, those who once passed along it.

02

The Grand Hall

The former dining room has been restored to its original grandeur, complete with its original buffet.

03

The Maharaja Library

The old hotel bar now serves as the Maharaja Library; its more than century-old counter has been meticulously restored and returned to service. Along the newly panelled walls appear portraits of the Indian princes who once spent their summers here.

04

The Cinema

A simple idea pursued seriously: the perfect private cinema, finally realised.

05

The Games Room

A gentlemen's room for cards, billiards and long evenings — panelled, low-lit, and made for conversation.

06

The Spa

A private day spa with gymnasium, sauna, and whirlpool — a quiet retreat within the house.

07

Bedrooms

Das Murany offers several bedrooms, including two “Cartier Rooms”, reminiscent of the time when a branch of the Parisian house resided here.
